Kylian Mbappe becomes France’s all-time top scorer in win over Senegal

Kylian Mbappe broke France’s scoring record as Les Bleus opened their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Senegal.

France secured all three points in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match after defeating Senegal 3-1 in New Jersey, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice to become the country’s all-time leading goalscorer.

After a difficult first half, France took control in the second period. Mbappe opened the scoring with a low finish before Bradley Barcola doubled the lead. Senegal responded through Ibrahim Mbaye, but Mbappe sealed the victory in stoppage time with a stunning long-range strike.

The Real Madrid forward’s brace took his international tally to 58 goals, moving him past former record holder Olivier Giroud and making him France’s highest goalscorer ever.

Senegal had created the better chances before the breakthrough. Nicolas Jackson struck the post, while Ismaila Sarr missed a clear opportunity just before half-time. France were also involved in a controversial penalty appeal when Mbappe went down under a challenge from Sadio Mane, but the referee ruled no foul after a VAR review.

Mbappe’s record-breaking performance gives France a winning start to their World Cup campaign and strengthens their status as one of the tournament favourites.
