At least two people were killed and six others injured in a massive Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow and the surrounding region, according to Russian authorities.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defences intercepted more than 1,600 drones since Saturday, including 450 that were heading towards the capital. He described the assault as an unprecedented attack.
Several drones reached the Moscow Oil Refinery in the capital, while another struck a residential building, Sobyanin said. Reuters witnesses reported hearing explosions and seeing smoke rising from the refinery, although the full extent of the damage was not immediately known.
In the wider Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said two people were killed in separate incidents. A drone strike on a three-storey residential building in Sofyino killed one person and injured five others, while another person was killed in the Orekhovo-Zuyevo district.
The attack also forced the evacuation of about 400 people, including 70 children, from a 21-storey apartment building in the Ramenskoye district after a fire broke out. Several homes and vehicles were damaged. The assault came on the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections. Sobyanin accused Ukraine of trying to disrupt the vote, although Kyiv had not publicly commented on the latest attack in the immediate reporting.
The drone offensive also disrupted air travel. Moscow’s Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo airports introduced temporary restrictions, with Vnukovo halting arrivals and departures before operations resumed later.
The latest strikes are part of an intensifying campaign in which Russia and Ukraine have increasingly targeted energy and logistics infrastructure. Both sides have continued such attacks despite US President Donald Trump saying earlier in the week that they had agreed to stop targeting energy facilities.
