Former NBA coach David Fizdale has been named the new head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers.
The Nigeria Basketball Federation has officially appointed David Fizdale as the new head coach of D’Tigers ahead of upcoming international basketball competitions and qualification campaigns.
Fizdale arrives with strong coaching credentials and years of experience in the NBA. The 51-year-old previously served as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies and the New York Knicks, while also working as an assistant coach with several top NBA franchises. His appointment is seen as a major step in Nigeria’s effort to rebuild and strengthen the national basketball team on the global stage.
Speaking after his appointment, Fizdale expressed excitement about leading D’Tigers and revealed that former Nigeria coach Mike Brown played a key role in convincing him to accept the position.
“I’m super excited,” Fizdale said. “I have Mike Brown to thank. After several discussions, we agreed that I would try to help the team qualify and compete at the highest level.”
Mike Brown previously guided Nigeria to one of the biggest moments in the country’s basketball history when D’Tigers defeated the United States in a pre-Olympic exhibition game before the Tokyo Olympics. That victory brought global attention to Nigerian basketball and raised expectations for future international success.
The NBBF will now look to Fizdale’s experience and leadership to help D’Tigers return to top form as preparations continue for future continental and global tournaments.
Nigeria remains one of Africa’s strongest basketball nations, with growing international recognition and a rising number of Nigerian players competing in the NBA and other elite leagues worldwide.
D’Tigers supporters will be hoping Fizdale’s appointment marks the beginning of a successful new era for the national team.
