The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed more than 12 tonnes of illicit drugs in Kano State, reinforcing its efforts to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse.
The agency said the drugs were seized during intelligence-led operations, targeted raids and sustained enforcement activities carried out across the state.
According to the NDLEA, the crackdown has also resulted in successful prosecutions, with some convicted offenders receiving prison sentences of up to 15 years.
Speaking during the destruction exercise, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the public disposal of the drugs demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting communities from the harmful effects of illegal substances.
“The public destruction demonstrates our firm resolve to deny criminal networks the ability to poison our communities,” the governor said.
Governor Yusuf added that the state government is supporting enforcement efforts through rehabilitation programmes. These include the Kiru Rehabilitation Centre, the Anti-Illicit Drugs and Phone Snatching Committee, the deployment of security marshals to crime hotspots, and the Safe Corridor Project, which focuses on youth rehabilitation and reintegration.
The governor also revealed that more than 400 youths have been arrested in recent operations. While many have undergone rehabilitation and reintegration, those involved in serious crimes are facing prosecution.
Authorities say enforcement, intelligence sharing and rehabilitation will remain central to Kano’s fight against illicit drugs.
