Four members of Uganda’s boxing team have gone missing following the conclusion of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, prompting an ongoing police investigation.
The missing athletes failed to board their scheduled flights back to Uganda and have reportedly switched off their mobile phones.
Uganda’s team manager said he had “no idea” why the athletes disappeared.
Officials Hope Athletes Return
Uganda’s Chef de Mission, Godwin Kayangwe, said reports suggesting the athletes intended to seek asylum remained unconfirmed. He expressed hope that they would return to Uganda before their UK visas expire in October.
Authorities have not publicly identified the missing boxers. Police in Scotland confirmed that inquiries are continuing into a number of Commonwealth Games athletes who did not travel home with their respective teams.
However, officials indicated that there are limited legal options available while the athletes remain in the country under valid visas. Should they fail to leave before their visas expire, immigration authorities may become involved.
Similar Incidents at Major Sporting Events
Disappearances involving athletes during international sporting competitions have occurred previously, with some competitors using overseas tournaments as opportunities to seek asylum or remain abroad.
At this stage, Scottish police have not indicated whether any criminal offence has been committed, and there is no confirmation regarding the intentions of the missing Ugandan athletes. The investigation remains ongoing.
