Team Nigeria dominates in Alexandria with eight gold medals in women’s events.
Nigeria has secured its 15th African women’s wrestling title after a dominant performance at the African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria. The team won eight gold and two silver medals across 10 events to finish top once again.
Gold medals came from standout performances by Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu and Mercy Adekuoroye, who all secured convincing victories in their categories. Nigeria’s dominance continued across both days of competition, reinforcing their status as the continent’s leading force in women’s wrestling.
In the men’s freestyle category, Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo delivered a key highlight by defeating Egypt’s Mohamed Mostafa to win gold. The men’s team added silver and bronze medals to finish third overall.
Nigeria has consistently led women’s wrestling in Africa, with this latest triumph extending a long-standing record of success at the continental level.
With another commanding display, Team Nigeria has once again set the benchmark for wrestling excellence in Africa.
