The National Youth Service Corps has denied entering into any agreement with the National Association of Nigerian Students over the collection of levies from students as a condition for NYSC mobilisation.
The NYSC made this known in a statement on Tuesday. It described the viral report as false and urged prospective corps members to disregard it. The denial came after NANS indicated that its proposed annual ₦200 dues could become a requirement for students seeking mobilisation into the NYSC scheme.
NYSC explains mobilisation process
The NYSC said its mobilisation process is handled through established official channels. It also stressed that the process has no connection with student associations.
“The NYSC wishes to state unequivocally that it has not, at any time, discussed, agreed to, or entered into any Memorandum of Understanding with the National Association of Nigerian Students regarding the collection of any levy from students in connection with mobilisation for national service.”
According to the scheme, mobilisation involves NYSC management and the heads of corps-producing institutions. The institutions provide information on their graduates for the mobilisation process. The NYSC said student associations have no role in the procedure.
“The mobilisation process is neither linked to nor contingent upon the activities of any student association or organisation.”
The scheme also said it operates under the authority of the Federal Government. It explained that it only implements policies and procedures approved by the appropriate government authorities.
The NYSC therefore described claims suggesting otherwise as false and unauthorised. It urged students and prospective corps members to rely on official NYSC channels for information about mobilisation and avoid making payments based on unverified claims.
