Nollywood actress Omotola Ekeinde has opened up about her cinema earnings from A Mother’s Love. The movie grossed N103,094,633 during its cinema run. However, the producers reportedly received only N22 million after several deductions. Omotola shared the details while giving fans an update on the movie’s journey.
According to the actress, several charges reduced the movie’s earnings. These included exhibitors’ fees, VAT, entertainment tax and withholding tax. Advertising and distribution costs also affected the final amount. Omotola explained,
“We made ₦103 million from Mother’s Love and we the producers took home ₦22 million at the end of it.”
She also said she had to withdraw the movie because of pressing issues.
Meanwhile, Omotola kept a promise made by Red Hot, the production company behind the movie. She donated 10 percent of the producers’ N22 million share to Slum to School. The donation supports the NGO’s work with children from underserved communities. She also described her first cinema run experience as challenging but rewarding.
The actress has previously spoken about the need for better structure in Nollywood. She once compared the industry with Hollywood over payment systems and residuals. Omotola said she had worked in Hollywood for four years and received monthly residuals. However, she said she got no residuals from her 30 years in Nollywood.
Her latest revelation has again sparked conversations about how cinema revenue is shared among filmmakers.
