Onanuga: Obi’s party defections show he can’t be trusted on one-term pledge

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, has questioned Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

In a post on X on Thursday, Onanuga said Obi’s history of changing political parties showed that his political promises could not be trusted.

Obi had earlier said in an interview with News Central TV that he would not remain in office beyond four years in order to preserve stability and maintain the north-south power rotation arrangement.

Reacting to the claim, Onanuga recalled Obi’s time in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), where he allegedly pledged loyalty to the party before later defecting.

“If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything,” Onanuga wrote.

According to the presidential aide, Obi once vowed never to leave APGA, the platform under which he became governor of Anambra state.

“He gave his word to Ikemba, even on his deathbed, swearing loyalty and fidelity to APGA,” he said.

Onanuga argued that Obi later abandoned the party for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and subsequently moved across different political platforms.

“Peter Obi’s pledges have always been short-lived,” he said.

“He ultimately abandoned APGA for the PDP, and since then, he has drifted from one political platform to another — a political rolling stone.”

The presidential spokesman said Obi’s political history undermined confidence in his latest pledge.

“By his own actions, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted,” he wrote.

“His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances.”
