A wave of Russian attacks has left nine people dead in Ukraine and caused major damage to a centuries-old religious landmark in Kyiv.
Russian missile and drone strikes killed nine people across Ukraine on Monday, according to Ukrainian officials. Four people died in Kyiv, while five rescue workers were killed in Kharkiv while responding to a fire caused by an earlier strike.
The attacks also damaged the historic Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described the incident as a direct assault on both the country’s people and cultural heritage.
The strikes injured dozens more, disrupted power supplies for over 140,000 residents in Kyiv. Also triggering air raid alerts across much of the country. Ukrainian officials said they would seek international action through bodies including the UNESCO.
The latest escalation comes ahead of the G7 summit in France. The war in Ukraine is expected to remain a key topic of discussion.
