The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its alleged failure to investigate claims involving ₦800 billion in Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds.
SERAP accused some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors of diverting the funds for political and campaign activities. The organisation said INEC failed to investigate the allegations.
SERAP seeks court order
SERAP said government authorities allocated the funds for public development projects.
However, the organisation alleged that some governors redirected the money to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
The group has asked the court to order INEC to investigate the allegations and carry out its constitutional responsibilities.
Group cites anti-corruption laws
SERAP argued that INEC’s failure to investigate could weaken public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The organisation also said anyone who diverted public funds for political purposes violated public trust and anti-corruption laws.
According to SERAP, public institutions must promote transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
What happens next?
The court will decide whether INEC must investigate the allegations. Meanwhile, INEC will have an opportunity to respond to SERAP’s claims during the legal proceedings.
