Veteran Nollywood actor Sunday Afolabi has opened up about the hardship that pushed him into minibus driving. His story followed a viral video showing him calling passengers into a commercial bus.
Speaking on Talk to B Show, Afolabi explained how his move to Badagry affected his acting career. He built his home there because it was affordable at the time. However, the long distance from central Lagos soon became a major problem.
“Out of sight is out of mind,” he said.
He added that acting jobs were already difficult to secure. Afolabi also revealed how financial pressure forced him to sell his Nissan Quest for N180,000. He used the money to settle debts and buy a used motorcycle. Unfortunately, he suffered several accidents while riding it.
One accident happened when he fell into a pothole during a plumbing job. The injury badly affected his jaw. Another crash left him in hospital for almost two weeks. Despite these challenges, Afolabi refused to beg for food. Instead, he tried tailoring, solar installation, photography and commercial bus driving.
Meanwhile, the viral minibus video left the veteran actor feeling uncomfortable. He said the public reaction made him worry about how people viewed him.
“This is a wrong presentation of me to the world,” he said.
Still, Afolabi stressed that there is no shame in honest work. He also revealed that the minibus is currently not working. According to him, getting a good car could help him switch to Uber driving. That move could also give him more freedom to attend film locations.
Afolabi is now appealing for accommodation closer to Lagos’ major film locations. He believes such support could help revive his acting career. He also praised his wife for standing by him through difficult times.
The actor started his career in 1970 with Adelove Theatre Troupe. He later featured in projects such as Owo Blow, Madam Dearest, Super Story and Village Headmaster. His experience reflects the struggles many veteran Nigerian entertainers face after decades in the industry.
Hopefully, his latest appeal will open a new chapter in his career.
