Tensions rise as China warns Taiwan is the key flashpoint in its ties with the US.
Taiwan has expressed concern after China described the island as the “biggest risk” in its relationship with the United States.
The warning came during a phone call between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. China urged Washington to “make the right choices” on Taiwan to maintain stability between the two powers.
In response, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry criticised Beijing for what it called repeated “threatening remarks,” saying China continues to escalate pressure on the island.
China views Taiwan as a breakaway province and has not ruled out the use of force to take control. Military activity around the island has increased in recent years, with near-daily air and naval operations.
The latest exchange comes ahead of a planned summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, where Taiwan is expected to be a central issue.
Taiwan also accused China of blocking diplomatic travel, after its president delayed a planned Africa visit. This was due to airspace restrictions reportedly influenced by Beijing.
The situation highlights growing geopolitical tensions, with Taiwan remaining at the centre of a fragile and increasingly contested global power balance.
