PDP Deputy Chairman Arapaja Reportedly Set to Defect to APC

Arapaja

Fresh political developments may be unfolding in Oyo State as Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, a former Deputy Governor of the state and National Deputy Chairman (South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is reportedly preparing to leave the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

The reported move, if confirmed, could mark a significant shift in Oyo’s political landscape, given Arapaja’s longstanding relationship with Governor Seyi Makinde and his influence within the PDP.

Sources Link Planned Defection to PDP Crisis

According to reports, Arapaja recently met with President Bola Tinubu as consultations over his next political move gathered momentum.

Sources familiar with the development claimed the former deputy governor may resign from his position as PDP National Deputy Chairman (South) before formally announcing his defection to the APC.

Discontent Over Governorship Primary

Multiple party sources alleged that Arapaja became dissatisfied with the conduct of the PDP governorship primary that produced Abimbola Adekanmbi as the party’s candidate.

One source claimed the former deputy governor did not get a level playing field during the primary process.

“After the primary, he was treated with disdain and disrespect. That was when he realised he was no longer relevant in the political structure.”

Another source alleged that Arapaja’s influence within Governor Makinde’s political camp had steadily declined after the primary.

Security, Appointments Allegedly Fuel Decision

A source identified as a chieftain of the PDP/APM alliance in Ibadan claimed the withdrawal of Arapaja’s security personnel further heightened concerns about his future in the party.

The source also alleged that several political appointments previously allocated to Arapaja’s loyalists during Makinde’s first term were withdrawn in the administration’s second term.

“He believes he needs to move to where his security and political future can be guaranteed.”

The source further claimed that while other political leaders allegedly secured supervisory councillor positions across the state’s 33 local government areas, Arapaja’s supporters received none.

No Official Confirmation Yet

As of the time of filing this report, neither Arapaja nor Governor Makinde has publicly responded to the reported defection.

The PDP has also not issued an official statement on the claims. The reported move therefore remains unconfirmed.
