Minister of Works David Umahi has ordered the display of President Bola Tinubu’s pictures on the First Niger Bridge. The bridge links Anambra and Delta states.
Umahi gave the directive on Wednesday during an inspection of the bridge’s ongoing rehabilitation. He visited the Onitsha end of the bridge in Anambra State. The minister asked the South-East and South-South Senior Special Assistants to beautify the bridge with Tinubu’s pictures. He said the President deserved appreciation for supporting the project.
“They’ll beautify, they’ll color it with the President’s pictures.”
Umahi also ordered the removal of all illegal advertisements on the bridge. He said advertisers must first obtain approval from the Ministry of Works. According to him, nobody should place adverts on the bridge without permission.
Meanwhile, the minister announced plans to install more solar lights on the bridge. He also ordered officials to complete the closed-circuit television cameras. In addition, Umahi directed officials to connect the CCTV system to the Second Niger Bridge. He said the measures would improve monitoring and security around the bridge.
The First Niger Bridge remains under rehabilitation after vandals damaged some of its structural components. Umahi said the bridge would remain closed until workers complete the repairs. He also formed a committee to inspect the bridge above and below the water level. The committee must submit its findings before the end of work the following day. The inspection will help officials assess the bridge’s condition before reopening it to motorists.
