Kenneth Okonkwo has stirred fresh controversy over President Bola Tinubu’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
The former Atiku Abubakar campaign spokesperson claimed Tinubu is avoiding the US because he fears possible arrest. Okonkwo made the allegation during an interview on Arise News on Wednesday.
According to Okonkwo, Tinubu should have attended the UNGA in person. He also questioned why the President has not personally attended the gathering since 2023. Vice President Kashim Shettima is representing Nigeria at the 81st session in New York.
“Onanuga is there saying what he does not know, and the President is somewhere hiding,” Okonkwo said.
“Maybe because he does not want the Venezuela option, because he ought to be at the UNGA in person.”
He further claimed Tinubu’s absence suggests he is avoiding the United States. Okonkwo also connected Tinubu’s absence to past US legal records involving the President.
Kenneth Okonkwo referenced the $460,000 forfeiture involving Tinubu in the 1990s. He also mentioned efforts to obtain US records linked to the matter.
However, his claim that Tinubu is avoiding UNGA because he fears arrest remains an allegation. There is no evidence in the reports reviewed that Tinubu is facing an arrest order from Trump.
