President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with religious leaders to promote peace, harmony and tolerance across Nigeria.

The President made the pledge on Saturday while receiving Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Tinubu Calls for Interfaith Cooperation

Tinubu said dialogue among religious groups remains one of the most effective ways to strengthen national unity and tackle security challenges.

He urged religious leaders to continue preaching peace and tolerance across the country.

“My administration will continue to work on religious harmony among all faiths. Our bishops and religious leaders have been doing a great deal. Please tell them to continue the good work they are doing. Let them continue to preach peace and tolerance. We cannot have an excess of that.”

President Praises Catholic Church’s Contributions

The President commended the Catholic Church for its contributions to education, healthcare and humanitarian services in Nigeria.

He said the church has played an important role in national development over the years.

“I understand the roles that the Catholic Church has been playing in expanding the frontiers of education, health and humanitarianism in Nigeria. It means a lot to us, and the country is benefiting from it.”

Tinubu also recalled his long-standing relationship with the church, dating back to his time as Governor of Lagos State.

Tinubu Speaks on Security

The President said his administration has intensified efforts to improve security across the country.

According to him, the government has increased investment in surveillance and other security measures, especially in previously ungoverned areas.

He also said the Federal Government is investing in young people to reduce their vulnerability to terrorism and violent extremism.

Archbishop Gallagher Commends Nigeria

Archbishop Gallagher thanked the Nigerian Government for supporting the Catholic Church and facilitating visa processes for bishops.

He also praised President Tinubu’s efforts to promote peace and strengthen security.

The Vatican envoy described Nigeria as a strategic country for the Catholic Church because of its large and vibrant Catholic population.

He added that Pope Leo XIV appreciated Tinubu’s attendance at his inauguration and looked forward to welcoming Nigeria’s ambassador to the Holy See in the coming weeks.

Visit Strengthens Bilateral Relations

Gallagher visited Nigeria to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Holy See.

He expressed confidence that the visit would deepen cooperation between both parties and encourage more engagements in the future.
