Canada earn first-ever World Cup point

Cyle Larin’s second-half goal helped Canada avoid defeat in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Co-hosts Canada earned their first-ever point in FIFA World Cup history after battling back to secure a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto.

Bosnia-Herzegovina took the lead in the 21st minute through Jovo Lukic, who headed home from a corner to score his first international goal. Canada responded in the second half and found an equaliser in the 78th minute when substitute Cyle Larin scored just minutes after coming off the bench.

The Southampton striker showed quick feet to beat his marker before firing a shot past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, with a slight deflection helping the ball into the net.

Canada had several chances before the equaliser, including efforts cleared off the line and a shot that struck the crossbar. The hosts continued to press and were rewarded with a deserved goal late in the match.

The result marks a historic milestone for Canada, who lost all three matches in their previous World Cup appearances in 1986 and 2022.

Canada’s 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina delivers the nation’s first-ever World Cup point and a positive start to their 2026 campaign.
