The US military will begin routine testosterone deficiency screening for service members aged 30 and above.
The US Department of Defense will introduce annual testosterone deficiency screening for active-duty and reserve troops aged 30 and older. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the new policy on Wednesday. Troops diagnosed with low testosterone can choose to receive hormone replacement therapy. Personnel under 30 may also request testing.
Pentagon says programme will improve troop readiness
According to Hegseth, the programme aims to improve long-term health and military readiness. He said the treatment is for medical care and not for performance enhancement. Pentagon officials added that the screening programme takes effect immediately.
However, the Pentagon has not confirmed whether female service members will be included. Some lawmakers welcomed the move, while others questioned the policy. Medical experts also warned that testosterone therapy may carry risks, including infertility and cardiovascular complications.
The testosterone deficiency screening programme is part of the Pentagon’s broader effort to improve the health and readiness of US military personnel.
