Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, vice-presidential candidate to Peter Obi in the 2023 election, has resigned from the Labour Party, citing internal issues and what he described as sustained pressure on opposition platforms.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Datti said he would formally join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
“I’m leaving the Labour Party midnight tonight, and I’m joining PRP. PRP is the new destination,” he said.
He said the party no longer reflects the ideals it once stood for.
“What Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today,” he said.
Datti also alleged that certain actions within the party were targeted at frustrating him.
“They redeployed someone with a specific purpose, to make life difficult, particularly for me,” he said.
He further accused the federal government of focusing on weakening opposition parties rather than addressing national challenges.
“Instead of fighting insecurity and fixing our economy, what is more important is to destroy political parties,” he said.
However, he said he does not blame politicians who switch platforms under such conditions.
“I don’t blame anybody for going where they think,” he added.
Datti described the PRP as a party with a strong historical foundation and said it offers a viable alternative.
“PRP is the one with a history,” he said.
He added that he would continue to support efforts to build a credible political alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.
Datti, however, ruled out personal ambition for top political office.
“Why do I have to be president or vice-president?” he said.
