FRSC Confirms Fatal Night Crash in Ogun

No fewer than 11 people have died after a vehicle plunged off the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi.

According to Odunsi, the accident occurred late Sunday night and involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ.

He explained that the vehicle reportedly somersaulted before plunging off the bridge.

Victims Trapped Inside Vehicle

Odunsi said all 11 occupants inside the vehicle lost their lives during the crash.

The victims included 10 adult males and one adult female.

“The incident involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping the occupants inside as the doors locked upon impact,” the statement read.

Furthermore, he disclosed that rescue operatives from the FRSC Itori Unit Command quickly arrived at the scene after receiving distress alerts.

FRSC officials, alongside members of the local community, later dismantled the damaged vehicle to recover the bodies of the victims.

Authorities Cite Drunk Driving, Overloading

According to the FRSC, officials deposited the remains of the deceased at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.

Odunsi also revealed that preliminary investigations pointed to drunk driving and overloading as likely causes of the crash.

“The preliminary report cites driving under the influence and overloading as the probable causes,” he added.

FRSC Urges Caution on Highways

Meanwhile, Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, advised motorists to exercise caution while travelling, especially at night.

He urged drivers along the Abeokuta-Lagos corridor to avoid speeding, reckless driving, and overloading.

In addition, Ogunjobi expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

“He also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased,” the statement added.

Road safety officials have repeatedly warned motorists about the dangers of speeding, drunk driving, and unsafe night travel along major highways in the state.
