The biggest tournament in football history kicks off tomorrow. And some of the world’s most iconic teams will be watching from home.
FIFA expanded the 2026 World Cup to 48 teams precisely to give more nations a shot at the greatest stage in football. Yet somehow, five teams with serious footballing pedigree still did not make it. Here are the absences that sting the most.
1. Nigeria — Africa’s Biggest Miss
Nigeria are the most notable African team to miss the tournament, losing to DR Congo in the CAF playoff final on penalties.
That result means no Victor Osimhen. No Ademola Lookman. Two of the biggest names absent from the entire tournament are both Nigerian.
For a country that has produced some of Africa’s most exciting football in recent years, missing consecutive World Cups is a crisis that demands serious structural answers from the NFF.
2. Italy — Three Straight Tournaments and Counting
The biggest absence heading into the 2026 World Cup is once again Italy. The four-time world champions will miss the tournament for a third consecutive edition — something almost unimaginable for a nation that last lifted the trophy in 2006.
The Azzurri struggled in qualifying against a powerful Norway side led by Erling Haaland before falling to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoffs.
3. Poland — The End of the Lewandowski Era
Poland fell short in the World Cup playoffs and that is expected to be the end of Robert Lewandowski’s international career, which is a huge shame.
The White-Reds had been present in the last two World Cups, reaching the round of 16 in 2022, but they lost to Sweden in the playoff final on March 31.
One of the greatest strikers of his generation will likely never play at a World Cup again. That is a loss for football, not just Poland.
4. Denmark — Fallen Short at the Wrong Moment
Christian Eriksen looked set for his last dance with Denmark at a FIFA World Cup after suffering a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020. However, Denmark’s efforts came undone in a 3-1 penalty shootout loss to Czechia.
While Eriksen’s best days may be behind him, Denmark should have been able to qualify. Rasmus Hojlund was unable to contribute a single goal or assist across both playoff matches.
A painful exit for a team that deserved better.
5. Cameroon — Africa’s Other Big Loss
Cameroon will not feature at the 2026 tournament, having lost in the semi-finals of the second round of CAF qualification to DR Congo.
The Indomitable Lions, who memorably beat Brazil at the 2022 World Cup, will sit this one out. The likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Carlos Baleba will be notable absentees.
Both are in good form at club level. Neither will get to show it on the world stage this summer.
The 2026 World Cup kicks off tomorrow with more teams than ever before. But football fans across Nigeria, Italy, Poland, Denmark, and Cameroon will spend the next six weeks watching someone else’s dream unfold.
Some absences hurt more than others. These five hurt the most.
