The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has unveiled a N6 billion investment to establish digital transformation hubs across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. This strategic project aims to build advanced ICT Experience Centres to bridge the digital gap in higher education.
TETFund Executive Secretary Arc. Sonny Echono announced that the initiative will eventually reach over 270 beneficiary institutions nationwide.
Consequently, the agency allocates N1 billion per zone under its strategic intervention framework.
Therefore, TETFund is shifting focus from physical buildings to technological capabilities for a knowledge-based economy.
Equipping Students with High-Demand Digital Skills
Addressing the scope of the project, TETFund Board Chairman Rt. Hon. Aminu Masari stated that the hubs will drive true digital transformation.
Furthermore, students and researchers will gain practical experience in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics, and software development.
“The ultimate objective is to improve graduate employability and encourage innovation,” Masari declared. “Our goal is to prepare Nigerian youths to compete globally.”
In addition, each centre will feature 24-hour solar power systems and high-speed internet connectivity.
The facilities will offer free access to digital devices and software. This ensures that economically disadvantaged students can complete academic work without financial strain.
Institutional Commitments and Phased Implementation
Highlighting early operational milestones, pioneer facilities have already opened at selected institutions. These include the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) and the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, commended the intervention. She noted that the facilities will help students turn academic concepts into practical technological solutions.
“The world is increasingly driven by technology and digital skills,” Awuzie noted. “Our youths must be equipped not merely to participate, but to excel.”
Moreover, TETFund expects to complete 15 additional facilities by early 2027 while upgrading existing campus infrastructure.
Finally, the Fund emphasized strict project monitoring. This oversight ensures these ICT centres remain active hubs for innovation, entrepreneurship, and skill acquisition.
