Seven miners have died after a mining pit collapsed at Kassa community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The collapse occurred on Wednesday evening while mining activities were taking place at the site. Several other miners were reportedly injured. According to a resident, Albert Danlami, the incident happened at about 7pm when the pit suddenly gave way. Burying the miners underground. Residents and fellow miners subsequently gathered at the site and began efforts to reach those trapped.
Danlami described the incident as devastating, saying the collapse triggered panic in the community as residents rushed to the mining site.
Rwang Tengwong, Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), confirmed that seven miners died in the incident. Tengwong said rescue efforts were launched after the collapse, but the trapped miners were eventually found dead.
The incident adds to a growing record of fatal mining accidents in Plateau State. Here, collapsing pits have previously claimed lives in mining communities across Barkin Ladi, Jos South, Riyom and other local government areas.
The repeated incidents have continued to highlight the dangers faced by miners operating in these areas. Mining pits can collapse without warning.
