U.S. Embassy in Beirut Closes Until Further Notice

The U.S. Embassy in Beirut announced on March 3, 2026, that it would remain closed until further notice. Embassy officials pointed to ongoing regional tensions as the direct cause.

The embassy posted the decision on the social media platform X. “Due to ongoing regional tensions, US Embassy Beirut will be closed until further notice,” the statement read. “All other regular and emergency consular appointments have been cancelled. We will communicate when the Embassy returns to normal operations.”

Tensions Rise After Strikes on Iran

The closure followed large-scale attacks that the United States and Israel launched against Iran on Saturday. Those strikes killed nearly 800 people, including Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran responded quickly. Tehran fired drones and missiles at Israel and at US assets in several Gulf countries.

Israel Steps Up Operations in Lebanon

Meanwhile, Israel carried out fresh airstrikes across Lebanon starting Monday. The attacks killed at least 52 people and injured more than 150 others. Israeli forces also launched a ground incursion into southern Lebanon. Troops engaged in renewed fighting with the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.

Other US Embassies Shut Down

The move in Beirut formed part of wider security steps. Iran struck the US Embassy in Riyadh with drones and caused limited damage there. Officials closed that embassy as well.

In addition, the US Embassy in Kuwait announced its own closure until further notice and cancelled all consular services.
