Buba Galadima, a senior chieftain of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), proposed that Britain should recolonize Nigeria. He made this suggestion during an appearance on a program aired by the African Independent Television (AIT) network. Galadima framed the proposal as a necessary response to the country’s deteriorating security and governance conditions.
Galadima’s Rationale
Galadima expressed deep concern about the Nigerian government’s inability to protect its citizens. He argued that selfish interests had prevented leaders from fulfilling their basic duties. “The government should remove selfishness and do the job of protecting citizens and providing an enabling environment for them to thrive,” Galadima stated. He added that current approaches had failed to deliver stability or prosperity.
Furthermore, Galadima outlined specific conditions for such intervention. He indicated that external forces could help establish order where domestic institutions had faltered.
The Mercenary Alternative
Galadima presented foreign recolonization as one option among several drastic measures. He first suggested the deployment of mercenaries to combat insecurity. “If they can’t bring in mercenaries, let Britain come back, enforce rule of law, teach democracy and good governance, and curb corruption,” he said.
This statement revealed his preference for structured external oversight over continued domestic mismanagement.
