China says the US-based Myanmar scholar is under investigation for activities linked to national security.
China has confirmed the arrest of US scholar and Myanmar analyst U Min Zin, accusing him of espionage and endangering national security.
The scholar, who serves as executive director of the Myanmar Institute for Strategic and Policy Studies (ISP-Myanmar), was reportedly detained in the Chinese city of Kunming in early June while attending a meeting. Chinese authorities have not released further details about the allegations.
U Min Zin is known for his research on Myanmar and China’s influence in the region. He is also a PhD student at University of California, Berkeley and has spent years studying political developments in Myanmar.
The arrest comes shortly after a high-profile meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. It also precedes an expected visit to China by Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing.
Chinese authorities have yet to disclose specific evidence against U Min Zin as concerns grow among his family and observers.
