The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene and cushion the impact of the recent spike in petrol prices on Nigerian workers and households.
The labour union warned that the rising cost of fuel has significantly worsened the cost of living across Nigeria. Putting enormous financial pressure on workers and their families.
NLC Demand for Cost-of-Living Support
In its appeal, the NLC urged the government to introduce a cost-of-living allowance for workers. Along with a wage award to help offset the growing economic hardship caused by high fuel and transportation costs.
The labour body also requested tax relief measures for workers, arguing that reducing the tax burden would help increase disposable income and provide some financial relief during the current economic challenges.
Call to Revive Public Refineries
Beyond immediate relief measures, the NLC stressed the need for urgent rehabilitation and revival of Nigeria’s public refineries. The union said restoring local refining capacity would help reduce the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products and stabilize fuel prices in the long term.
Nigeria has long struggled with refinery inefficiencies despite being one of Africa’s largest crude oil producers.
Growing Economic Concerns
The labour union warned that without swift government action. The continued rise in petrol prices could further worsen inflation and deepen the economic difficulties already faced by many Nigerians.
The NLC urged authorities to act quickly to protect workers’ welfare and prevent further economic strain on households across the country.
