Nigeria moves closer to hosting 2031 African Games as inspectors arrive

Nigeria has taken a major step in its bid to host the 2031 African Games after officially receiving the evaluation team from the African Union Sports Council (AUSC).

The delegation was welcomed by the National Sports Commission in Abuja. Marking a crucial phase in the competitive bidding process for Africa’s biggest multi-sport event.

Inspectors Assess Facilities and Readiness

The AUSC team is currently conducting a detailed inspection of Nigeria’s sporting facilities, infrastructure, and overall preparedness. The evaluation covers stadiums, accommodation, transport systems, and logistics required to host a world-class tournament.

According to officials, the inspection is designed to measure Nigeria against established continental standards, ensuring only capable nations are selected.

Strong Case Built on Experience

Nigeria is leveraging its history of hosting major sporting events, including past editions of the African Games, to strengthen its bid. Officials say the country’s large market, growing private sector involvement, and existing infrastructure give it a competitive edge.

The bid also includes plans for sports medicine, athlete welfare, and financial sustainability. All aimed at delivering a successful and memorable tournament.

Focus on Legacy and Economic Impact

Beyond hosting, Nigeria’s vision centers on long-term benefits. The government says the Games would drive infrastructure development, create jobs, and boost youth participation in sports.

Officials have reiterated their commitment to presenting a strong case. Positioning Nigeria as a capable and ambitious host ready to deliver a lasting legacy for African sports.
