‘I’m not afraid’ — Okinbaloye responds to Wike’s ‘I would have shot him’ remark

Seun Okinbaloye, anchor of Politics Today on Channels Television, says he is not intimidated by comments made by Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over his remark that Nigeria is drifting into a one-party state.

In a media chat, the minister said he “would have shot him” over comments on Nigeria’s political direction.

Reacting, the journalist said he remains committed to his work and will not be intimidated.

“Let me be clear, I’m not afraid and I will not be intimidated,” he said.

He thanked civil society organisations, viewers, and both local and international groups for their support, describing it as a reinforcement of commitment to truth and accountability.

Meanwhile, Lere Olayinka, media aide to Wike, had earlier clarified that the minister’s comment was figurative and taken out of context.

Olayinka said Wike did not intend any threat and had already spoken with Okinbaloye to explain his remarks.

However, Okinbaloye said that regardless of the clarification, such statements are inappropriate in a democratic setting.

“Violent rhetoric or suggestive threats are never appropriate responses to dissent,” he said.

He added that although he received reassurances regarding his safety, including from security agencies, public figures must be mindful of their words.

“We must not create an environment where such statements can be exploited by those with harmful intentions,” he said.

Okinbaloye reiterated that journalism is a public duty and not a concession to power.

“I will continue to ask the necessary questions, hold power to account, and work in the interest of Nigeria,” he said.
