16 Killed, 110 Bandits Neutralised in Niger Attack

Bandits struck again in Shiroro. This time, the security forces struck back harder.

Fourteen vigilante members including their commander, and two civilians have been killed in a fresh bandit attack on Bagna and Yelwa communities in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

The attack, confirmed in a statement by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Nuhu Nana, on Friday, also claimed the life of a woman among the civilian casualties.

In response, joint security operations across multiple locations in Shiroro resulted in the neutralisation of 110 bandits. Security forces recorded the highest toll in Lantan Village with 47 neutralised, followed by Farin Kasa with 20, Lakupe with 21, Luwidna with 16, and Rafin Barden Dawaki with six.

The Niger State Government described the outcome as a major breakthrough, saying it underscored the effectiveness of ongoing joint operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks in the region.

The state government expressed condolences to families of the fallen vigilantes, acknowledging their bravery and sacrifice. It also assured the public that additional security reinforcements and strategic measures have been deployed to sustain momentum and prevent further attacks.

Residents were advised to remain vigilant, avoid movement in vulnerable areas, and cooperate with security agencies by sharing credible information.

Shiroro has been a persistent flashpoint for banditry in Niger State, with armed groups repeatedly targeting farming communities and vigilante forces — particularly at the onset of the planting season when rural populations are most exposed.

The security forces gained ground this week. But in Shiroro, the fight is far from over.
