Army Chief Pushes for Local Defence Production Through Research, Training

Shaibu Seeks Investment in Military Innovation

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for stronger investment in human capital development and military research to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on foreign military imports.

He said the move would help strengthen local defence production and improve national security capacity.

Shaibu made the call on Tuesday in Abuja while receiving the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Sunday Echono, at the Army Headquarters.

Army, Academia Partnership Seen as Key

According to a statement signed by Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, Shaibu stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the military and academic institutions.

He said such partnerships remain critical in addressing evolving security threats.

In addition, he explained that academic research and innovation can help Nigeria build indigenous defence capacity.

Therefore, he urged deeper cooperation between both sectors.

Nigerian Army Expands Focus on Emerging Technologies

Shaibu said the Nigerian Army plans to strengthen engagement with TETFund through specialised training programmes.

These programmes will focus on armament technology, drone warfare, robotics, artificial intelligence, and other modern defence systems.

According to him, such training will prepare army officers for changing battlefield demands.

As a result, the military can improve operational performance and maintain high professional standards.

Security Challenges Need Wider Collaboration

The Army Chief said modern security threats require broader cooperation beyond military operations alone.

He noted that a whole-of-society approach remains necessary in tackling complex security issues.

Furthermore, he explained that academic innovation, technological growth, and military strength must work together.

He added that developing local expertise will improve Nigeria’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

It will also strengthen operational sustainability.

Shaibu Commends TETFund Support

Shaibu praised TETFund for supporting military-related educational institutions.

He specifically acknowledged the Nigerian Army University, Biu, and the Nigerian Army College of Management Sciences, Makurdi.

According to him, such support continues to improve education, research, and professional development within the armed forces.

TETFund Reaffirms Commitment

In response, TETFund Executive Secretary, Sunday Echono, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to deeper collaboration with the Nigerian Armed Forces.

He said the partnership will focus on advanced research, military intelligence, innovation, and emerging technologies.

Moreover, he recognised the military’s role in education and national development through its institutions.

The renewed collaboration may further support Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen local defence capabilities.
