Prestianni handed six-match ban for homophobic conduct

Argentine winger Gianluca Prestianni has been suspended for six matches over homophobic conduct.

Gianluca Prestianni six-match ban

Gianluca Prestianni received a six-match ban following disciplinary action for homophobic behaviour.

The punishment could be extended globally if FIFA approves a request to apply the suspension worldwide. If that happens, the sanction would likely make the winger unavailable for this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

Prestianni made his senior debut for Argentina in November but is not considered a regular squad member. If he is not selected for Argentina, the remaining matches of the ban could be served with Benfica in European qualifying competitions.

The case comes as football authorities increase efforts to punish discriminatory conduct in the sport.

Gianni Infantino has also backed tougher sanctions, including red cards for players who try to hide offensive comments by covering their mouths.

The issue is expected to be discussed further at the FIFA Congress on April 30.

The suspension sends another signal that football authorities are under pressure to crack down on abuse and discrimination.
