Russian superyacht passes Strait of Hormuz despite blockade

A luxury yacht linked to a Russian billionaire has crossed the Strait of Hormuz despite ongoing restrictions in the vital shipping route.

The 142-metre superyacht Nord, linked to sanctioned Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov, travelled from Dubai to Muscat, Oman, over the weekend.

The vessel was one of the few private boats to pass through the strait in recent months, as tensions between Iran and the United States continue over access to the waterway.

Around one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making it one of the most important trade routes globally.

Shipping traffic in the area has dropped sharply since Iran tightened controls following recent military strikes and warnings to vessels entering the zone.

The conflict has also pushed Brent crude oil prices higher, reaching $109 per barrel on Monday.

The yacht’s passage highlights how global tensions are continuing to disrupt trade, energy markets and maritime security.
