Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of breaking separate ceasefires announced around Victory Day celebrations.
Russia and Ukraine exchanged fresh accusations on Friday after both sides reported drone attacks, artillery strikes and military activity despite temporary ceasefire declarations.
Russia’s defence ministry said Ukrainian forces committed more than 1,300 ceasefire violations within hours of the truce. According to Moscow, the attacks included artillery shelling, drone strikes and assaults on civilian targets in the border regions of Kursk and Belgorod. Russian officials also reported drone activity near Moscow, where about 20 drones were reportedly intercepted.
Ukraine, however, rejected Russia’s claims and accused Moscow of continuing attacks across the front line. Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces launched more than 850 drone strikes and over 140 attacks on Ukrainian positions during the opening hours of the ceasefire period.
Ukraine also accused Russia of striking civilian infrastructure, including a kindergarten in the Sumy region, where two people were reportedly killed. Kyiv said Russia ignored its earlier proposal for a ceasefire beginning on 6 May.
The growing tensions come as European leaders continue discussing possible diplomatic efforts to end the war. Antonio Costa said the European Union sees “potential” for future negotiations with Russia regarding regional security and peace efforts.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian emergency services are battling a major wildfire near Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Officials said dry weather, strong winds and landmines are making containment difficult, although radiation levels remain stable.
The latest developments highlight the fragile state of ceasefire efforts as the war continues.
