The Kwankwasiyya movement says some political commentators have launched “targeted attacks” against Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso over his reported political alliance with Peter Obi.
In a statement issued on Friday, the movement said discussions around possible strategic cooperation between Kwankwaso and Obi under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) had generated panic in some sections of the northern political establishment.
According to the group, many Nigerians across political and regional divides had welcomed the development as a step toward national unity and democratic consolidation.
However, it alleged that some commentators had resorted to “misleading narratives” aimed at discrediting Kwankwaso.
“What appears to be troubling certain interests is not merely the possibility of political cooperation, but the enormous national potential such an alliance represents,” the statement reads.
The movement said a political understanding between both politicians could reshape opposition politics by bridging regional divides.
It described Kwankwaso as a leader with “one of the most disciplined and organic grassroots political structures in northern Nigeria”, particularly in Kano and the north-west, while Obi was said to command significant support among youths and urban voters across southern Nigeria.
“For the first time in recent political history, Nigerians are witnessing the realistic possibility of a broad-based political understanding capable of bridging the long-standing regional divide in opposition politics,” the statement added.
The movement said critics had unfairly portrayed Kwankwaso as “ambitious or disruptive” while describing similar political engagements involving others as patriotic.
“This double standard is both unfortunate and revealing,” it said.
According to the group, the growing acceptance of Kwankwaso and the possibility of collaboration with Obi had unsettled entrenched political interests.
“Those attempting to dismiss this reality are not engaging in analysis; they are expressing political fear,” the statement said.
GRASSROOTS INFLUENCE
The movement also defended Kwankwaso’s political relevance, saying his influence was built on grassroots support rather than access to federal power.
“It is rooted in years of service, grassroots connection, and the trust of millions of Nigerians, especially among the youth and lower-income population,” it added.
The group urged political stakeholders and commentators to promote fairness and issue-based politics rather than “selective hostility and orchestrated narratives”.
It added that coalition-building and political inclusion should be encouraged as part of democratic growth in Nigeria.
