Norovirus outbreak on cruise ship sickens 115 people, CDC says

More than 100 passengers and crew members have fallen ill during a Caribbean Princess voyage, according to the CDC.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said a norovirus outbreak aboard the Caribbean Princess cruise ship has sickened 115 people so far. The agency confirmed that 102 passengers and 13 crew members reported symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting.

The outbreak was reported during the ship’s April 28 to May 11 voyage. The Caribbean Princess is currently heading toward Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic before its scheduled arrival at Port Canaveral, Florida, on May 11.

The CDC said the cruise operator responded by increasing cleaning and disinfection measures, isolating sick passengers, and collecting stool samples for testing. Princess Cruises described the illnesses as “mild gastrointestinal illness” and said the ship will undergo deep cleaning before its next trip.

Health officials also clarified that the norovirus outbreak is unrelated to the separate hantavirus incident involving the MV Hondius cruise ship.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the Caribbean Princess prepares to dock in Florida.
