Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has praised Nigerian nurses and midwives for their contributions to healthcare delivery across the country.
In a one-minute video posted on X on Tuesday by Esther Umoh, his personal photographer, Obi described nurses as the backbone of the healthcare system.
The former Anambra governor spoke in commemoration of the International Nurses Day, marked every May 12.
“Today, May 12, 2026, being World Nurses Day, I wish to most sincerely appreciate our nurses and midwives for their immense contribution to our healthcare,” he said.
“Nurses are the heart of healthcare and healthcare is the number one measure of human development.”
Obi also reiterated his support for the training of healthcare workers across Nigeria.
“That is why I’m committed and travel all over Nigeria for training of nurses and healthcare professionals,” he said.
According to him, improving healthcare would remain a priority in the vision of a “new Nigeria”.
“In the new Nigeria, healthcare will be a priority,” Obi said.
“And the personnel that will contribute in achieving that priority must be well trained to global standards.”
