Trump plans direct talks with Taiwan President over arms deal

Donald Trump says he plans to speak directly with Taiwan’s president as the US weighs a major weapons sale to the island.

Donald Trump said he will speak with Lai Ching-te about a possible US arms package for Taiwan, marking a major break from long-standing diplomatic protocol.

US presidents and Taiwanese leaders have avoided direct official communication since 1979, when Washington formally recognised China instead of Taiwan. Trump’s comments came as the US considers approving a reported $14 billion arms deal that could include air-defence systems and anti-drone equipment.

Trump also praised his relationship with Xi Jinping following their recent summit in Beijing. However, Beijing has repeatedly warned Washington against strengthening military ties with Taiwan, which China claims as its territory.

Taiwan has increased defence spending under President Lai amid growing military pressure from China. The US, while officially recognising Beijing, remains legally committed to helping Taiwan defend itself under the Taiwan Relations Act.

Trump’s planned call is expected to raise tensions between Washington and Beijing as debates over Taiwan security continue to intensify.
