White House Shooting: Suspect killed after attack near checkpoint

A suspected gunman was shot dead after opening fire near the White House on Saturday evening, authorities confirmed.

The U.S. Secret Service said a man pulled a gun from his bag and started shooting near a White House security checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC.

Agents immediately returned fire, killing the suspect during the exchange. The man was later identified by U.S. media as 21-year-old Nasire Best, who reportedly had a history of mental health issues and previous contact with law enforcement.

One bystander was injured during the shooting and taken for treatment. No Secret Service officers were hurt, and President Donald Trump was not affected by the incident.

The shooting happened just one month after another gun-related security scare near the White House. Authorities said the area remained under heavy security overnight as investigations continued.

President Trump later praised the Secret Service for its “swift and professional action” in responding to the attack.
