A devastating fire at a packed Bangkok bar has claimed at least 27 lives, with dozens more injured, prompting fresh concerns over fire safety standards in Thailand.
At least 27 people were killed and 22 others were left in critical condition after a fire tore through Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district shortly after midnight on Monday. Emergency officials said the blaze spread rapidly after starting near the venue’s stage. It proceeded by cutting off electricity and filling the building with thick smoke.
Firefighters arrived within minutes and brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes. Most of the victims were found inside a bathroom, where they had reportedly taken shelter while trying to escape the flames. Authorities said more than 60 people were taken to hospital, with many suffering severe burns and smoke inhalation.
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been triggered by an electrical fault in an air-conditioning unit. Officials also believe highly flammable ceiling decorations may have accelerated the blaze. Investigators are examining reports that the emergency exit may have been obstructed during the incident.
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, visited the scene and pledged a full investigation. Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt also confirmed the building has been closed for 30 days. This is to allow forensic teams determine the exact cause of the disaster.
The tragedy has renewed scrutiny of Thailand’s fire safety enforcement, following several deadly fires in entertainment venues in recent years.
While investigations are ongoing, financial assistance has been announced for victims and the families of those who lost their lives.
