The European Union has fined Temu after investigators found dangerous and illegal products on the platform.
European Commission has imposed a €200 million fine on Temu for failing to prevent the sale of illegal and unsafe products, including dangerous baby toys and faulty phone chargers.
The Commission said Temu did not properly assess or reduce risks linked to products sold on its marketplace. Investigators found that some chargers failed basic electrical safety tests, while certain toys contained harmful chemicals or choking hazards.
Temu has been under investigation since October 2024 under the European Union’s Digital Services Act, which sets strict rules for major online platforms. The company has been ordered to submit a corrective action plan by 28 August or face further consequences.
Henna Virkkunen said the penalty sends a “very strong message” about consumer safety and platform responsibility in Europe. Temu said it disagrees with the ruling and considers the fine disproportionate.
The penalty is the second major content-related fine issued under the EU’s Digital Services Act. This follows a previous action against X.
