Nato and EU condemn Russia after drone hits Romanian apartment

A Russian drone struck a residential building in Romania, injuring two people and triggering strong reactions from Nato and the European Union.

A Russian drone crashed into an apartment block in the Romanian city of Galați near the Ukrainian border, causing a fire and injuring two residents, Romanian officials said.

Romania’s emergency authority confirmed that the drone’s explosive payload detonated on impact, setting the 10th floor of the building on fire. Around 70 people were evacuated while emergency crews brought the situation under control.

NATO and the European Union condemned the incident, describing it as another dangerous consequence of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Romanian President Nicușor Dan said the drone was likely diverted after being struck by Ukrainian air defences.

Romania’s defence ministry said two F-16 fighter jets were deployed after multiple drones were detected near Romanian airspace. Officials noted that the military had only four minutes to react before the drone hit the building.

Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said the alliance remained ready to defend all member states. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also stated that Russia’s actions had crossed “another line”.

The incident marks the first time Romanian civilians have been injured by a drone linked to the Russia-Ukraine war.
