US not turning away from Asian allies, says Pete Hegseth

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says Washington remains committed to Asia despite ongoing global security challenges.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Pete Hegseth reassured Asia-Pacific allies that the United States is not shifting its focus away from the region while managing conflicts elsewhere, including tensions involving Iran.

Hegseth said the US can meet its global obligations while maintaining a strong military presence in Asia. He also pledged continued support for regional allies and defended Washington’s ability to fulfil arms agreements despite concerns over a suspended weapons package for Taiwan.

The US defence chief warned about China’s growing military capabilities but stressed that Washington is seeking stability rather than confrontation. He said the goal is to maintain a balance of power in the region and prevent any country from dominating its neighbours.

Hegseth also renewed calls for Asian allies to increase defence spending, suggesting a target of 3.5% of GDP. He praised countries such as Japan, South Korea, Australia and Philippines for strengthening military cooperation with the US.

The remarks come as Washington seeks to reinforce its influence in the Asia-Pacific region amid growing competition with China and ongoing concerns over regional security.

The US says its commitment to Asia remains firm and will continue alongside its broader global security responsibilities.
