Kanye West returned to the European stage with a massive concert in Turkey, attracting more than 118,000 fans despite facing restrictions and cancellations in several countries.
The American rapper, popularly known as Ye, performed on Saturday night at Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium. The event marked his first European performance since 2014 and his debut concert in Turkey.
Massive Crowd Turns Out in Istanbul
According to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, the concert lasted for about two hours.
Fans travelled from several countries to attend the event. The audience included visitors from Britain, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia and parts of the Middle East.
The large turnout highlighted Ye’s continued popularity despite ongoing controversies surrounding his public statements.
Controversies Continue to Follow Rapper
In recent years, Ye has faced criticism for a series of antisemitic comments and actions.
The backlash intensified after he released the song “Heil Hitler,” which drew widespread condemnation for promoting Nazi ideology.
Consequently, several planned performances across Europe faced opposition from governments, event organisers and advocacy groups.
Several Countries Block Performances
Earlier this year, British authorities denied Ye entry into the country.
As a result, organisers cancelled his planned appearance at London’s Wireless Festival.
Similarly, reports that French officials sought to block a concert in Marseille led to the postponement of the event.
In addition, organisers cancelled another planned performance in Poland amid concerns over his controversial remarks.
Despite those setbacks, Ye remains scheduled to perform in the Netherlands on June 6 and June 8.
Turkey Concert Marks Major Return
The Istanbul show represents one of Ye’s biggest performances in recent years.
Supporters viewed the concert as a significant comeback, while critics continued to question decisions to host the rapper following previous controversies.
Nevertheless, the event proceeded without major disruptions and attracted one of the largest crowds of his recent career.
Future European Shows Still Planned
For now, Ye’s upcoming performances in the Netherlands remain on schedule.
Industry observers continue to watch closely as European authorities and event organisers weigh public concerns against the artist’s commercial appeal.
Meanwhile, the Istanbul concert demonstrated that the rapper still commands a substantial international audience despite ongoing criticism and restrictions in several countries.
