A powerful earthquake in the southern Philippines has left at least 19 people dead and more than 130 injured.
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao Island on Monday morning, causing widespread destruction across southern Philippines. Authorities confirmed at least 19 deaths, while more than 134 people were reported injured in several provinces, including South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City.
The quake triggered tsunami alerts in the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, and Australia. Some warnings were later lifted after only small waves were recorded. Videos shared online showed severe damage, including the collapse of a Jollibee restaurant and other structures near the epicentre.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said government agencies were coordinating emergency response efforts and ordered the suspension of classes in affected areas. More than 130 aftershocks, some as strong as magnitude 6.7, have been recorded since the initial quake.
The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active seismic zones. This makes earthquakes a frequent threat across the country.
Rescue operations and damage assessments are ongoing as authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and support affected communities.
