Marriage Dispute Sparks Religious Controversy
A woman has sparked widespread debate online after alleging that her husband shut down her business because she decided to stop practising Islam.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the woman claimed her husband locked her shop and cut off her source of income after she informed him that she wanted to return to Christianity.
Speaking in Yoruba, she explained that she was raised in a Christian home and never expected religion to become a major issue in her marriage.
Woman Claims Husband Changed His Position
According to her, her husband initially assured her that she could continue practising Christianity after their marriage.
She said he never objected to her faith during their relationship and encouraged her to maintain her religious beliefs.
However, she alleged that his attitude later changed.
“My husband locked my shop and collected all my source of income because I said I don’t want to be a Muslim again. I grew up in a Christian family, and he didn’t tell me at the beginning that I must follow his religion,” she said.
Family Intervention Led to Conversion
The woman further claimed that disagreements over religion began after marriage.
According to her, the situation became serious when her husband insisted that she must adopt Islam.
She said family members later intervened and encouraged her to comply in order to maintain peace in the marriage.
“He told me to continue practising Christianity and that he had no problem with it. Later, he insisted that I must follow his religion. We argued about it at first, but my family advised me that a wife should practise her husband’s religion,” she explained.
Decision to Leave Islam Triggers Conflict
Despite accepting the arrangement, the woman said she eventually became uncomfortable and decided she no longer wanted to practise Islam.
She alleged that her decision created tension in the marriage and led to fresh disagreements between them.
According to her, the conflict escalated when her husband allegedly locked up her shop, cutting off her means of livelihood.
Social Media Users React
The claims have generated mixed reactions across social media platforms.
While some users defended the woman’s right to choose her religion, others argued that religious expectations should have been addressed before marriage.
The incident has also reignited conversations about personal freedom, financial control, and the role of religion in marital relationships.
