NDLEA destroys N2.8 billion worth of illicit drugs in Edo state

The anti-drug agency says the operation has dealt a major blow to drug trafficking networks in Edo State.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed 73,463.21 kilogrammes of illicit drugs with an estimated street value of N2.8 billion in Edo State.

Speaking during the destruction exercise, NDLEA Chairman, Mohamed Buba Marwa, described the operation as a significant setback for criminal groups involved in drug trafficking and abuse. Represented by the agency’s Director of Operations and General Investigation, he said the seized drugs would have harmed thousands of Nigerians if they had reached the streets.

According to the NDLEA, cannabis accounted for the largest portion of the destroyed drugs at 73,210.23 kilogrammes. Other substances included tramadol, diazepam and codeine cough syrup.

The Edo State Government also backed the operation, warning drug traffickers to stay away from the state. Officials said the fight against illicit drugs is closely linked to efforts to tackle kidnapping, banditry and other crimes.

The NDLEA says it will continue intensifying operations to curb drug trafficking and protect communities across Nigeria.
