Moscow hit by largest Ukrainian drone attack since start of war

Hundreds of drones targeted Moscow and other Russian regions in Ukraine’s biggest attack on the Russian capital since the war began.

Russian authorities said nearly 200 drones struck targets around Moscow, injuring at least 17 people and triggering major fires. Thick smoke was seen rising from several locations, including the Kapotnya oil refinery, which was reportedly hit for the third time in a month.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said almost 1,000 drones and four Ukrainian cruise missiles were intercepted across the country within 24 hours. In the southern Rostov region, an oil depot was hit and one person was killed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the operation as a response to a recent Russian attack on Kyiv. He said Ukraine would continue long-range strikes while calling on Russia to pursue diplomacy to end the conflict.

The attack forced the temporary closure of Moscow’s four airports, leading to hundreds of flight cancellations and delays. Meanwhile, Russia launched more than 200 drones and several ballistic missiles at targets in Ukraine overnight.

The latest escalation highlights the growing reach of Ukraine’s long-range drone campaign as the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fifth year.
