Croatia secured their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, eliminating Panama and boosting their chances of reaching the last 32.
Croatia defeated Panama 1-0 in Toronto on Wednesday to remain in contention for a place in the World Cup knockout stage.
Substitute Ante Budimir scored the decisive goal nine minutes into the second half, calmly converting Josip Stanisic’s low cross after Croatia made attacking changes at halftime.
Panama threatened during a competitive first half and created several chances after falling behind. However, Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic produced a series of important saves to preserve the lead and secure all three points.
The victory marked Croatia captain Luka Modric’s 200th international appearance. The 40-year-old midfielder became only the fourth male player to reach the milestone and celebrated the achievement with a winning performance in his fifth World Cup tournament.
Croatia now need a win against Ghana in their final Group L match to guarantee a place in the last 32, while Panama have been eliminated after losing their opening two games.
Croatia’s World Cup journey remains alive, while Panama’s campaign comes to an early end.
